Children with suspected food allergy are seen at the Outpatient Clinic of Pediatrics by one or more experts of the Pediatric Allergy Team. The Pediatric Allergy Team consist of allergy consultants (pediatric nurses), pediatricians and dietitian, all with specific allergology expertise.
Before the First Outpatient Visit
You will receive an invitation for the first appointment after referral from the General Physician, Youth Healthcare Doctor or other Medical Specialist. You can be asked to admit an allergy questionary before the first appointment.
During the First Outpatient Visit
We aim to have a clear (sometimes preliminary) conclusion and plan by the end of the first outpatient visit. During this visit, the symptoms will be assessed (including a detailed dietary and allergy history), and a physical examination will be performed. You may see several specialists from the allergy team, including the Dietitian, Allergy Consultant (Pediatric Nurse), and Pediatrician.
After evaluating the symptoms, a (preliminary) conclusion will be formulated, and it will be discussed whether additional investigations (such as blood tests, skin prick tests, or provocation tests) are necessary. If needed, a treatment plan will also be discussed, and instructions for medication administration will be provided.
Please note that the first appointment may vary in duration between 30 minutes and 2 hours. This depends on the complexity of the symptoms, the decision to carry out additional tests during the visit, and/or the discussion of the treatment plan (including instructions for medication use and administration).
Follow-up
Follow-up will be planned depending on the medical diagnosis, need (and timing) for additional tests and/or evaluation of the treatment plan.
